Reading Rewards
Our computer system allows us to record sales under a customer's name. As a result, we are able to keep track of what you read and reward our regular customers.
If, in any calendar month, you spend $100 or more, we will issue you a $10 Gift Voucher for every $100 you spent in that month. We will hold these vouchers for you at the shop.
At the beginning of each month, we will send you a card notifying you when you have qualified for a Pages & Pages Reading Reward. Any purchases where books are already discounted, e.g. Reading Groups & Sale Books, will not participate in the programme. You will need to remind our staff at the beginning of your purchase that you are part of our Pages & Pages Reading Reward scheme so that our computer system can record the sale under your name.
If other family members also shop at Pages & Pages, record your sales under your family name and maximise your rewards.
Children's Specialisation
Pages & Pages are a founding member of the Sydney based Specialist Children's Bookseller group (SCB). We are passionate about children's literature and about bringing children and books together. We believe in selecting and promoting the best books for children of all ages – whether old favourites or exciting new finds. You can be sure to find advice and guidance to lead you to the right book for any child.
Chris Page and her SCB group are responsible for the publication of Don't Leave Childhood Without… , a definitive guide to the best books for children of all ages. Don't Leave Childhood Without… is available from our bookshop for $6.95
Reading Groups
When the ‘2004 Books Alive' promotion of books and reading got under way, they turned to Chris Page for advice on Book Clubs and Reading Groups. This advice was posted on the Books Alive web site and included in the Books Alive brochure that recommended a list of 50 best books to buy. Here is what they published.
Book Groups How To Get Started
First of all, reading groups are great places to meet new people where you all have something in common. Reading groups also give you the opportunity to read books you may never have tried before and they are a delightful way to extend your knowledge and surprise yourself by enjoying something you thought you might hate.
The best way to start is to go to your local bookshop and register. I can only describe how we go about organising groups at Pages & Pages. When we have about ten names, we organise the first meeting at the shop. In this way everybody gets to meet each other on neutral ground. Seven or eight seems to be an ideal number for a group. At that meeting we discuss the various ways the bookshop can help, for example making sure the books selected are in print or in stock. We also let registered groups take books on approval to their meetings and give a reading group discount. Groups usually meet once a month at each other's houses. Lists of names and addresses are copied for each member and someone volunteers to host the next meeting. Each member takes a turn, some groups even meet at a restaurant! The person who is hosting the meeting comes into the shop a few days before the meeting to select the books on approval for the group to decide which one they will read for the following month. Most reading groups spend the first part of the meeting discussing the book they have read and the next part of the meeting choosing the one for the next month and so on.
At the first meeting I suggest some titles and give my reasons for selecting them. I choose examples from new fiction, backlist, biography, poetry, classics, current affairs, indeed anything that has something to discuss!
I suggest trying something such as each member reads a different book by an author, for example Tim Winton or Margaret Atwood. I suggest publishers notes and websites but at the same time try to focus the group on their own thoughts about the book. However, at first, publishers notes are very useful while the group establishes itself. I encourage the group by telling them how amazing it is that each person in the group will come to the meeting with very different perceptions about the book they have all read.
We have started and continue to assist about 50 reading groups. Some of them have been going for years!
Special Ordering We subscribe to a Books in Print database that contains information of books available around the world. If a book is not available locally, we can order from overseas, which we do twice a week. As we consolidate our orders, we are not hit with the high shipping costs you might incur shopping on the internet. Ask us to look up that obscure book for you. If you find something on the web you would like, come in with the details, email us at info@pagesandpages.com.au , or use our online order form and we will order it for you. Delivery is often quicker than from our local suppliers, and you get your Reading Rewards points.
