I could describe this novel as a coming of age story where a young boy learns about life by watching and listening to the adults around him. However it is much more than that.
The writing is superb, every word is thought about. For example his description of the liner,' lit like a long brooch.' Who needs more? The story is like a set of smaller stories
all connected, one minute we are on land the next at sea.
Full of unexpected events to keep us on our toes. What more could you ask? Now you know why this is my Book Of The Year. Chris
