'Housekeeper or Housewife?' the soldier asks Silvana as she and eight year old Aurek board the ship that will take them from Poland to England. It is the end of the second world war and she is being relocated with her husband Janusz. She isn't sure who she is after living in the woods of Poland for two years. He has also had an arduous journey, finally ending up in England. He isn't sure who he is so reinvents himself as the perfect husband, worker and citizen. Their two stories, plus the mystery at the herat of the novel make this a really compelling novel. Very reminiscent of Rose Tremain's Home and Andrea Levy's Small Island. Chris
